Over the past year, the Equity and Justice group has been discussing Christian Nationalism and its influence on the upcoming election, with the intention to present some programs on the topic. The first presentation was by Deacon Nick Bates, who came to preach and offer a talk on Sunday, June 2 which you can view the entire presentation Here.

This month’s speaker will be Dr. Myrna Perez Sheldon, an Associate Professor, jointly appointed in Classics & World Religions, and Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Ohio University. Describing her work on her Ohio University webpage, she explains, “I use history to understand how science and religion affect political and intimate life. I am a historian of science, scholar of religion, and a theorist of race, gender, and sexuality.” Dr. Perez Sheldon will talk about her understanding of Christian Nationalism in United States history, it’s relatively recent rise to become a source of political power, and some ideas for how Christians are drawn to this ideology. The hope is for us to come to a good understanding that can lead to meaningful dialogue on the topic. She comes to us with not only her scholarly work on history, religion, and science, but also with a personal background in evangelical Christianity.
